Acne
What is Acne?
This is unfortunately a very common skin condition that affects the hair follicle and sebaceous gland (oil producing glands) and causes bumps, cysts and nodules on the skin, which can lead to scarring and significantly affects ones mental health.
- Acne affects males and females equally
- It mainly occurs in teenagers and young adults (>85% of people between 16 and 18 years old are affected), but it can affect any age
There are four key factors involved in pathogenesis of acne:
- Follicular hyperproliferation and plugging – leading to white or black bumps (comedones)
- Excess sebum (oil) production
- Colonization by acne causing bacteria
- Inflammation
Anything that causes an increase in any of the above including hormones, drugs (including hormonal replacement therapy), foods such as dairy and high glycemic index foods can lead to acne by triggering the pathogenesis pathway.
Treatment
Depending on the type of acne you have mild, moderate or severe there are different treatment options: including topical creams and ointments, oral contraceptive pill, other oral medications including Accutane. People who want to avoid oral medications could benefit from a topical skin regimen and light therapy (with our Forever Clear).
Hyperchromia (discolouration – hyperpigmentation – dark spots – sun spots)
- Treatments include topical skin regimen
- A great option to treat age spots/sun spots is light therapy that we offer after Dr. Basanti confirms with dermoscopy (magnification of skin lesion) and in some cases possible biopsy to ensure that lesions are not cancerous and safe to do light therapy on
